Tributes have been flooded in ever since the demise of Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan has been announced.
The Life of Pi star passed away at 53, on wednesday following a battle with colon cancer.
The news of his demise was shared on Twitter by director Shoojit Sircar.
The ‘Piku’ director tweeted: “My dear friend Irfaan. You fought and fought and fought. I will always be proud of you.. we shall meet again.. condolences to Sutapa and Babil.. you too fought, Sutapa you gave everything possible in this fight. Peace and Om shanti. Irfaan Khan salute,” he wrote.
Irrfan Khan passed away on wednesday at a hospital in Mumbai, where he was admitted for colon infection. The 53-year-old actor had been battling cancer since 2018 and his official spokesperson had confirmed on Tuesday that he was under doctor’s observation. Irrfan is survived by his wife Sutapa and sons – Babil and Ayan.
His family issued an official statement, “I trust, I have surrendered”; These were the some of the many words that Irrfan expressed in a heartfelt note he wrote in 2018 opening up about his fight with cancer. And a man of few words and an actor of silent expressions with his deep eyes and his memorable actions on screen. It’s saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away. Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him. After having been struck by lightning in 2018 with the news of a rare cancer, he took life soon after as it came and he fought the many battles that came with it. Surrounded by his love, his family for whom he most cared about, he left for heaven abode, leaving behind truly a legacy of his own. We all pray and hope that he is at peace. And to resonate and part with his words he had said, “As if I was tasting life for the first time, the magical side of it”.
Irrfan Khan’s last film was ‘Angrezi Medium’, with Radhika Madan and Kareena Kapoor Khan. The film hit the screens days before the lockdown was announced and was later released on digital platforms, continuing to garner high praise from audiences.
Bollywood stars and fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to the much loved star.
Shilpa Shetty who worked with him in Metro Tweeted:
“I’m numb today… I haven’t been able to accept the loss of a brilliant co-actor & a fabulous person that @irrfank was! We’ve lost a gem today… but his legacy will live on through the phenomenal body of work that he has left behind. Rest in peace, Irrfan! #IrrfanKhan”
Kareena Kapoor Khan, shared a still from their last film Angrezi Medium and captioned it: “It was an honour sir. Rest in peace”
Amitabh Bachchan who shared screen space with Irrfan in the award winning Piku, tweeted:
“Just getting news of the passing of Irfaan Khan .. this is a most disturbing and sad news ..
An incredible talent .. a gracious colleague .. a prolific contributor to the World of Cinema .. left us too soon .. creating a huge vacuum .. Prayers and duas”
Shahrukh Khan who worked with him and was producer to him in the film Billu Barber also shared his loss on hiw social media. He said: “My friend…inspiration & the greatest actor of our times. Allah bless your soul Irrfan bhai…will miss you as much as cherish the fact that you were part of our lives. Love U”
