This year’s Academy Awards were one of the most anticipated in many, many years. When Hollywood’s biggest names came together under one roof at the Dolby Theatre to celebrate and felicitate their own, we saw many moments that will stay with us for a long time to come. We bring you our ten most unforgettable moments from the night.

10. That little Titanic reunion on the red-carpet had our hearts skipping a beat. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet arrived together at the Oscars, and we would like to believe coordinated their outfits. Both had their own dates though – Kate had her husband, and Leo brought his mom as his!

9. Bollywood was well-represented with our own Desi Girl a.k.a Priyanka Chopra turning up the heat in a white, intricately embellished Zuhair Murad gown. Zuhair Murad himself took to social media to express how stunning the Quantico star looked in the ‘princess’ gown. Others seemed to agree as Priyanka made it to most best dressed lists from the night! Priyanka was there to present the award in the Best Editing category.

8. Black comedian Chris Rock, proved that he was indeed the best choice to the night’s main host. His opening monologue, which usually sets the tone for the rest of the evening, was spot on as he addressed the Oscars So White debate, sexism on the red carpet and opportunities for people of colour while at the same time having the audience in peals of laughter. Takes great talent to get it right and Chris Rock totally got it right!

7. It always makes an Oscar night special when a film itself becomes a story that warms up the heart. From pretty early on, Mad Max: Fury Road, set itself up as a top contender for the night. Winning 6 Awards in quick succession, it was dominated by winners paying tribute to the vision of director George Miller. The wins helped make it one of the most loved Australian films at the Academy Awards.

6. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe were one of the first few sets of presenters and floored us with their comic timing (and of course it was hard to ignore how great they both looked!). Ryan Gosling sportingly making a joke about his

Oscar wins (or lack thereof) was oh-so-funny!

5. The Short Documentary category found its winner in Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy for her film A Girl in the River. This was the second win for the Pakistani filmmaker and her acceptance speech, which Huffington Post called ‘The Most Powerful Speech of the Oscars’ was one of the highlights of the night. ‘This is what happens when determined women get together’, she exclaimed and went on to share that the film had actually brought about a potential change in legislation to change the laws around ‘honour killings’ in Pakistan. Great going, woman!

4. When the Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, personally comes to introduce an act at the Oscars you know it is going to be something quite special. The performance that followed, Lady Gaga, singing her Oscar-nominated song ‘Till it Happens To You’ moved everyone in the audience. A song about sexual abuse on college campuses, the heartfelt performance also brought together victims of the vicious abuse on stage. Seeing them hand in hand was an image that we will hopefully remember forever.leo and brie

3. British singer Sam Smith won the Oscar for Best Original Song along with Jimmy Napes for ‘Writings on the Wall’ from the latest Bond-instalment, Spectre. In his acceptance speech he pointed out how there has not been an openly gay award winner in the past. It was especially for this reason that he dedicated his trophy to the LGBT community around the world. ‘I stand here as a proud gay man,’ said the singer to much applause from his peers.

2. Brie Larson had been tipped to be the favourite to win the Best Actress honours already, but it was her chemistry and interaction with her young co-star, Jacobus Trambley, in Room that won us over. When she was announced the winner, the very excited Brie got up and hugged Jacobus who played her son onscreen and made a special mention of her ‘partner’ onscreen. Jacobus seemed thrilled with all the attention as the audience went aww!

1. The Academy Awards 2016 became THE night as Leonardo DiCaprio FINALLY took home the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal in The Revenant. Leo who has previously been much of a bridesmaid and never quite the bride when it came to the Oscars, received a standing ovation from his peers in recognition of the decades of cinematic brilliance he has entertained us with.

Well done Leo!

As his mother and BFF Kate Winslet looked on emotionally, Leo took the opportunity to raise awareness about Climate Change, driving home the point that the time to start respected our environment is now or never. As he finished his speech with ‘Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted’, you couldn’t help but break into a smile for the man getting his dues!
