Flying, crashing from building to building an saving the world from peril is what makes an ideal superhero. As such, superhero films like The Dark Knight or the massive Avengers series – are usually huge winners at the Hollywood box-office.
Be it, Mr India, Krrish or Shaktimaan – there have been several successful Indian superheroes who have proceeded to gain an iconic title in Hindi cinema and television.
Of recent, we have seen two instances where there seems to have been collaborations between East and West and both examples have one thing in common, which is superheroes.
Ranveer Singh dubs in Hindi as Ryan Reynolds for Deadpool 2
Deadpool, as we know, is a hugely successful superhero flick. Not only is it slick and stylish, but the tongue-in-cheek and sarcastic humour is what drives the film to success. This week, Deadpool 2 releases and it promises more laughs and hardcore action sequences.
Recently, the news of Ranveer Singh dubbing for Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 2 made widespread headlines. The Hindi trailer promises to be a laughter riot as Ranveer adds his wit and edgy humour to the role.
About choosing the Padmaavat actor for the film, Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios, says, “Like Deadpool, Ranveer, too, is known for his smart, witty and irreverent humour. He’s a daring and powerhouse actor and we absolutely relished having him on board for our biggest superhero film.”
On seeing the trailer, the original Deadpool himself aka Ryan Reynolds too seemed to be quite impressed with this and joked on Twitter: “Well if I tried to curse in Hindi, pretty sure there would be an international incident.”
Though there have been several Bollywood actors who have dubbed for big Hollywood superhero films in the past (namely Varun Dhawan as Captain America), this is definitely one of the most hyped and highly awaited Bollywood dubbing roles!
Marvel’s new cinematic addition Kamala Khan
It was pleasant surprise to know that Marvel is reportedly planning to add Ms. Marvel / Kamala Khan into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In an interview, producer Kevin Feige stated: “Once we’ve introduced Captain Marvel to the world.”
The character Kamala, is of Pakistani descent from New Jersey, is a fan-favourite character that comic lovers have been championing to have her own starring role in the MCU.
As soon as the announcement was made, social media began speculating and suggesting who should play the role. There was a division of opinions. On one hand, some fans thought that Priyanka Chopra should play the role, whilst others thought a Pakistani-American should voice for Kamala Khan.
Interestingly, the Quantico star was the voice of Kamala in a video-game. However, as of yet, there are no confirmations on whom will essay the role of Ms Marvel and further updates are to follow.
Overall, it is quite refreshing to finally see Desi culture being brought to the forefront in Hollywood superhero films. By Ranveer Singh voicing for Deadpool 2 and Marvel launching Kamala Khan, it will not be long till we get our very own South-Asian equivalent of The Black Panther!
