It’s time to go back on the road again as Mahesh Bhatt has finally announced the sequel to his 1991 romantic thriller, ‘Sadak’ after two years of rumours in media. Sanjay Dutt and Pooja Bhatt who played the romantic couple in the original 27 years ago will be pairing once again in ‘Sadak 2’ which has been scheduled to release on 31st August 2018.
‘Sadak 2’ will showcase how the distinction between the house and the ‘sadak’ is fast disappearing. Sanjay and Pooja will be seen reprising their original character of Ravi and Pooja in this film, too. However, this time the focus will be more on Ravi’s character. “Sadak 2 will reflect the special relationship Mahesh Bhatt and Sanjay Dutt share. While my character is unique, and this film like Aashiqui 2 makes you believe in love at a time when it’s so easy to walk away from a relationship, it is going to be about Sanju from the first frame to the last. It’s my father’s ode to him,” Pooja said.
Talking about the sequel, Mahesh Bhatt said: “Innumerable discussions over a period of two-three weeks showed me how the once-vulnerable boy from Naam had matured into a deeper human being. Sanjay who was 32 when we made the original, comes back as a 54-year-old Ravi into the 21st-century world that is collapsing in front of his eyes, where the distinction between the house and the ‘sadak’ is fast disappearing. The story has the emotional connect of the films I made back in the’90s which brought a lump to the throats of the viewer. I could see that in the reaction of those present at the narration. They were visibly moved.”
Besides Sanjay and Pooja leading the cast, ‘Sadak 2’ will also have a young couple playing pivotal roles. However, the young actors are yet to be cast and the makers are still looking for “a boy with a striking personality and a girl who has the emotional resonance of Pooja and Alia Bhatt” to play the part.
Mahesh’s daughter Alia Bhatt was also rumoured to be in the ‘Sadak’ sequel. However, the filmmaker refuted the reports clarifying, “No, Alia is not going to be a part of this film. But it is going to bring back Pooja in a dazzling new avatar.”
‘Sadak’ had a groundbreaking musical score and Mahesh promises that just like the original, the sequel will have the music as its USP. While the music for ‘Sadak’ was composed by Nadeem-Shravan, Jeet Ganguli has come on board to score the music for the sequel. The makers have already finalized two songs for the film.
Mahesh Bhatt who helmed the original ‘Sadak’, however, will not be directing the sequel. He has decided to sit on the sets just as a producer. “That chapter (Direction) of my life is over, the page has turned. Pooja, Sanjay, Mukesh and I will decide on a director soon.”
