The mystery surrounding Anushka Sharma’s character in Sanju has been finally unravelled as director Rajkumar Hirani reveals that Anushka’s role is inspired by himself and writer Abhijat Joshi.

Present at the grand trailer launch yesterday, Hirani with producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and the star cast shared some inside information on Anushka’s character. He quipped, “Anushka is playing Abhijat Joshi’s (writer) and my role.”

He added, “To showcase a biopic like this, you have to compress few parts into one. Similarly, Anushka Sharma’s character is derived from myself and Abhijat. She is playing a biographer from London, and she comes to India. Sanjay wants her to write a book on him whereas she doesn’t want to.

We were also sceptical at first whether we should do this character or not. So basically she is us, but not as a filmmaker… (as) a biographer.”

From Sanju’s solicitor to a potential love-interest, initially, there were several speculations regarding the role. Sharma earlier stated, “I play a fictional character in the biopic. I play someone, who actually didn’t even exist in Dutt’s life. That’s all I can say right now.”

The film has Ranbir Kapoor playing out the real-life role of actor Sanjay Dutt, also stars Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Dia Mirza, Sonam Kapoor, Jim Sarbh and Vicky Kaushal.
