After a directorial hiatus of three years, critically acclaimed filmmaker Karan Johar (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, My Name is Khan) returns to screens as he takes the reigns of the film as producer-director. Known for his filmmaking panache of captivating audiences with narratives that take them on an emotional voyage of love, relationships and friendship, Karan has struck gold with the casting in this film, which is refreshingly eclectic. The keen eye of the director has made sure that every frame of the film comes across as the perfect ode to anyone who has fallen in love, endured heartbreak and formed friendships of a lifetime.
Shot in picturesque locations across Vienna and London, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil stars Indian cinema heavyweights including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (Devdas, Hum Dil Chuke Sanam) who assumes the role of Saba the stunningly beautiful poet – mysterious and sensitive in equal measure.
Ranbir Kapoor, who rose to prominence as Indian cinema’s favourite youth icon with films like ‘Barfi’ and ‘Yeh Jawani Hai De, portrays the role of Ayaan, a straight edged, preppy boy, with no remarkable experience in love or heartbreak, but nurturing a hidden desire to sing.
One the most successful Indian actresses of her generation Anushka Sharma known for her power-packed performances in films like Sultan (2015)and NH 10 (2014), essays the role of Alizeh, a fiercely independent girl, charming and funny and has a deep rooted sense of love and relationships.
The audio jukebox of the film has earned a chart-buster status within days. Composed by music maestro Pritam, the music of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a classic example of how new age Indian film music has refreshingly metamorphosed from traditional rhythms to deliver an album that resonates with every listener. The music is soulful and soothing, epitomizing the captivating charms of a delightful evening which gets accentuated to perfection with delightful vocals. The title track of the film – Ae Dil Hai Mushkil – is sung by Arijit Singh which was an instant hit the minute it broke the internet. The energetic ‘Bulleya’ is perhaps the song that feels in sync with the spirit of the film, highlighted by the cracking chemistry between Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Ranbir Kapoor. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a simple story about love, the shapes it takes, the ways it changes us and the exhilarating and often terrifying ride it takes us on. It is the journey of two characters, Alizeh and Ayaan as they navigate friendships, heartbreak and love, often together and sometimes apart.
Ayaan and Alizeh meet one night in New York, and a mutually life changing bond forms between them, that is ridden with humour, angst and a shared love of everything Bollywood. As they steer through life, their encounters and experiences shape their understanding of life, passion, love and what it truly means to have a soulmate. How Alizeh and Ayaan, two people who connected and separated over love, find closure in the romantic and unromantic forms the crux of the film.
