Janhvi Kapoor, daughter of late actress Sridevi and producer Boney Kapoor, is set to show off her acting capabilities in Dhadak, co-starring Ishaan Khatter (Beyond The Clouds). The film is an official remake of a regional Indian film Sairat, produced by Karan Johar and directed by Shaishank Khaitan (Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania).
Speaking to Asian Style Magazine, the 21-year-old revealed how her first film fell into place and that it wasn’t her mother Sridevi but designer Manish Malhotra, who recommended her to producer Karan Johar.
She said: ‘Manish, who is a very dear friend of our family and was very close to Mom, recommended Karan Johar to meet me. He is very close to Karan and told him about my wish to get into acting. Karan came home one day, and we spoke briefly. He asked me to come to his office a few times over the next months.’
Janhvi further explained how she didn’t really audition for her part in Dhadak at all but was tested by Johar in other ways before he recommended her to director Shashank Khaitan.
‘I did different script readings with him at his office. He would randomly ask me to perform on various scenes in different ways. I think, that was his auditioning process.”
She laughingly recalls that no one has still told her that she has been selected as the leading lady of the film: ‘It all just happened organically. There was no moment when I was told that I made the cut and I’m the heroine. In fact, I still haven’t been told that, even though we’ve wrapped up the film and it’s about to release.’
With no previous acting experience and an already closely followed celebrity life, Janhvi feels that audience acceptation is most important for her once her film releases. ‘While growing, learning and having that experience is great, the most important thing for me as an actress is for the audience to relate to the film and enjoy my performance too.’
She is also just like the rest of us when it comes to Queen Bey. Janhvi saw Beyoncé live at the Olympic Park in London during the On The Run II Tour while she was holidaying in the capital with her family recently. Janhvi was joined at the concert by siblings Anshula Kapoor, Kushi Kapoor and cousin Sonam Kapoor.
Speaking about seeing Queen Bey perform live for the first time, she said: ‘The concert was amazing. Beyoncé is a Goddess and to watch her perform, was nothing short of a lifetime experience.’
She also recollected her memories of holidaying in London with her mother Sridevi: ‘My Mom was very attached to the place and we have great memories of the city as a family.’
Sridevi, 54, passed away earlier this year in Dubai due to a heart attack. She was found drowned in her hotel bathtub by Janhvi’s father, film producer Boney Kapoor.
Talking about her love for the English capital, Janhvi said: ‘It’s a cultural hub with so many kinds of people and so much to do. The people are really kind, and the food is amazing. I’m a big foodie and every time I come to London, I end up putting on a s**t ton of weight, which is not the best thing right before I go on press tours.’
