It seems the flavor of biopics of sports personalities is not going to leave Bollywood so soon. After the box office success of ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, ‘Mary Kom’ and ‘Dhoni: The Untold Story’, the Hindi filmmakers are seeing this genre as fruitful with less creative risk and more revenue potentiality. And this is the reason biopics are being announced in every two months. More than ten biopics of sports personalities are in various stages of production right now while some have already been completed.
The latest to join the trend of biographical drama is, the legendary Indian athlete, PT Usha, often called the “queen of Indian track and field”. Noted ad filmmaker Revathy Varma is going to helm this project which will feature three stages of Usha’s life, as a child, athlete and as the mother and coach. This yet-untitled movie has been planned to be made in English, Hindi, Malayalam, Chinese and Russian languages in the estimated budget of nearly 100 crores.
“I have been working on the biopic for the last few years. It wasn’t easy to convince P.T. Usha. Each time I approached her, she said the time wasn’t right. She wanted to see an Indian with a gold medal in athletics in the Olympics, only after which she was ready to say ‘yes’ to the biopic. I somehow persuaded her and we signed the agreement six months ago,” Revathy confirmed the news.
Priyanka Chopra who is busy in Hollywood these days has been approached to play the ace athlete and Olympian in the movie. Although Priyanka has also shown her interest in the biopic, the filmmakers are struggling with her dates, due to which it is not confirmed yet that Priyanka Chopra will be playing the lead.
“Priyanka has been interested in the movie from the outset, but in the past two years, she got busy with her Hollywood commitments. Whoever is the actress will need to go through rigorous training and preparations, and will need to keep aside at least a year of their time. Both Priyanka and we are hoping she can find the time,” Revathy said.
According to sources, Sonam Kapoor has also been approached for the same movie and she has also expressed her wish to play the role. “But Priyanka Chopra is still their (the team of PT Usha biopic) first choice as her jawline and other features match that of Usha’s. Priyanka’s team is working on her dates and hopefully they will find a time suitable for all,” the source informed.
A.R. Rahman has been roped in to compose music for the film. This biopic is expected to be a grand spectacle and will showcase the sides of the athlete no one is aware of. The multilingual project will go on floors in six months’ time.
