Since the beginning of the winter season, my skin especially around the nose has started looking flaky and dry. So much so that it shows even if I apply a heavy coverage foundation on it. What should I be doing? (Manvi Seth, Harrow)
Ayesha Says: Hi Manvi, all of us, regardless of our skin type, need to take extra care of our skin during the colder months. The indoor heating robs the skin, especially the delicate skin on our face, of moisture much faster than normal.
The flakiness is being caused by the accumulation of the dry, dead skin. I would recommend a deep clean. Massage your cleansing lotion into your face in an upward motion for a few minutes followed by a rinse. Next, get an exfoliator (even drugstore brands work fine) and gently work that into your skin, focussing on the nose. Use a brush with the exfoliator for the extra glow. Once you have rinsed your face, dab it dry and apply generous amounts of your night moisturiser, massaging it into your skin. Repeat this once a week. You are guaranteed to wake up with a fresh glow!
Is there a trick to making foundation last the whole day? If I do my makeup in the morning, I find that by the afternoon, it fades and becomes uneven which doesn’t look nice. (Sara Khan, Southwark)
Ayesha says: Hi Sara, long-lasting makeup is every woman’s dream (and maybe some mens’ too!) The key to long-lasting makeup is well-prepared skin. Just as you would even out a wall and prep it before applying paint, in the same way the face is like a canvas and has to be readied before you start with your makeup.
First of all, ensure your skin is well-hydrated. Next, apply a primer all over your face, focussing on the t-zone. The primer will help reduce the appearance of any pores and give you a smooth surface to work on. It also helps the foundation sit on your skin better. Once your skin is ready, apply the foundation. Remember, always start light – you can build it up later. Powder your face with a large, fluffy brush after the foundation and let is settle for a few minutes. This will help your makeup stay in place all day!
I have been getting the shellac manicure for the last two years. This has made my nails brittle and dull. What can I do to have natural, healthy nails again? (Amrita Shah, Baker Street)
Ayesha says: Hi Amrita, shellac polish or any other kind of chemical nail treatment is not suitable for long term use. I would suggest keeping your nails short for a few weeks, to help them become less brittle. You also need to see if you are having enough nutrients in your diet for good nail health. Calcium is particularly essential.
I would suggest applying vitamin E oil (available widely at drugstores and pharmacies) to your nails every night before you sleep. Also, try and leave them with just a coat of nail hardener instead of polish till they regain their shine and strength!
