British retailer Jilbabs ‘R’ Us marked World Hijab Day (WHD) on Sunday 31st January 2016 with a fun day for the entire family at its flagship store in East Shopping Centre, located in the heart of London’s Green Street.
The free event was attended and supported by a number of popular British Muslim bloggers like Romy Ahmed, Sebina Hussain, Ezzakins, Queen of Sabba, Bubble Gum Hijab and Romy Ahmed, to name a few.
Featuring hijab tutorials, discussions, henna and face-painting, there was also an installation set up, titled the ‘Hijab Thought Tree’, for shoppers to share and write their thoughts on what the hijab meant to them.
The brainchild of the World Hijab Day movement, now running in its third year, is a New York resident, Nazma Khan, who came up with the idea as a means to foster religious tolerance and understanding by inviting women (non-Hijabi Muslims/non-Muslims) to experience the hijab for one day.
Aisha Oomerjee, Director at Jilbabs ‘R’ Us said: “The event’s been about awareness of the hijab and we hope we’ve made more people aware of World Hijab Day. We’ve had a fantastic turnout and certainly those who perhaps didn’t know much about the hijab, will maybe now go home and read more about it.”
